Help me understand fundamental christian beliefs about resurrection please?

I know that Christians believe that when we die our souls go to heaven or hell (or in Catholicism purgatory). However, if that is so, how is it possible that Christians also believe that in the end of days Jesus will resurrect the dead? if all souls are in heaven, hell, or living in bodies on the earth, what souls are in the resurrected dead?
